The church of St Peterโ€™s in the village of Beech was founded in 1902 with the land and the funding for the building donated by Commodore Anstis and was initially known as Captain Anstisโ€™ Mission church.

Prior to this the people of Beech either had to walk to Alton to attend church or walk across the fields to the chapel attached to Theddon Grange.

Church Heritage

Such was the enthusiasm and popularity of St Peterโ€™s when it was built that the length of the building was increased by a third and the altar raised.

The bellcote was built over the west porch and a bell presented by Mr Nelson Cameron (The bell and the roof have  recently been rehung and made good). Known by various names, Beech Mission Room, Beech Iron Room, Mission Hall and the Beech Mission Church, it wasnโ€™t until 1926 that it was dedicated to St Peter.

The โ€˜tin hutโ€™ church, as it is sometimes affectionately called, sits halfway up Wellhouse Road on the left hand side. The small piece of land around it is lovingly looked after by members of the congregation and the bench seat outside provides a quiet and reflective place to sit.

The church family is fully involved and helps to host events in the village including a delicious lunch held once a month in the village hall for older residents both from Beech and the surrounding areas (restrictions permitting).
